iPhone Warranty: How Long It Lasts and How to Check Your Coverage
Every iPhone comes with Apple's one-year limited warranty covering hardware defects, plus 90 days of complimentary technical support by phone or chat. The clock starts on the date of purchase.
Apple is the one brand on this site where checking your coverage genuinely is a real-time lookup. Enter your serial number or IMEI into Apple's coverage checker and it returns your exact repair coverage status and expiry date. There is no ambiguity and no need to guess from a warranty document.
The single most important thing to understand is what the standard warranty is not: it does not cover accidental damage. A cracked screen, a bent frame or liquid damage is your cost unless you have AppleCare+. Apple's own diagnostics detect liquid contact through indicators inside the device, so a phone that has been wet is identifiable even after it dries.
Note that consumer law in some US states may give you rights beyond Apple's limited warranty, and Apple states this explicitly in its own terms.
Only Apple can confirm that, because only Apple holds the record. Use the official links below with your serial number for the real-time answer. Everything here is context to help you ask the right question.
How long is a Apple iphone under warranty?
| What's covered | How long | What it actually pays for |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone hardware | 1 year | Defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. Apple repairs or replaces the device at its option. |
| Battery | 1 year | Replacement if the battery retains less than 80% of its original capacity — a defective battery, as opposed to normal degradation from charge cycles. |
| Included accessories | 1 year | The cable and any accessories supplied in the box are covered for defects on the same one-year term. |
| Complimentary technical support | 90 days | Phone and chat support for setup, software and usage questions. Hardware coverage continues for the full year after this expires. |
The warranty covers manufacturing defects, not damage. Screens that crack, frames that bend and water ingress are all excluded regardless of how careful you were.
Battery coverage is about defect, not wear. Batteries degrade with use, and a battery at 85% capacity after eighteen months is behaving normally, not failing. The warranty applies where the battery falls below 80% within the warranty period, which indicates a fault rather than ordinary ageing.
Unauthorized repairs can affect coverage. A third-party screen replacement does not automatically void your entire warranty, but Apple will not cover any subsequent problem attributable to that repair or to a non-genuine part, and some non-genuine parts disable features such as Face ID or true-tone display.
A device reported lost or stolen, or one still locked to another Apple Account, cannot be serviced. Apple will check activation lock status before accepting a device for repair.
You can check coverage without the phone in hand. Settings, then General, then About shows the coverage status directly on a working iPhone; the serial number works in Apple's web checker for a device that will not power on.
Where to find the serial number on a Apple iphone
Every warranty claim starts with this number, and on most products it is somewhere non-obvious. Here is where to look, in the order most likely to work.
- Settings, General, AboutScroll to Serial Number. On recent iOS versions this screen also displays your Coverage status directly, showing whether you have limited warranty or AppleCare+ and when it expires. Tap and hold to copy the number.
- The SIM tray, on some modelsOn several iPhone generations the serial or IMEI is laser-etched onto the SIM tray itself. Eject the tray with a paperclip and look closely — the print is very small and reads best with a magnifier or a phone camera zoomed in.
- The original boxApple prints the serial number and IMEI on a barcode label on the outside of the retail box. This is the reliable option when a phone will not turn on.
- In your Apple Account device listSign in to appleid.apple.com or check Settings under your name on another Apple device. Every device signed into your account is listed with its serial number, which works even if the phone is lost.
- Dial *#06# for the IMEIApple's checker accepts an IMEI as well as a serial number. Dialling this code on the phone's keypad displays it immediately.

What the Apple warranty does not cover
These are the exclusions that cause real claims to be declined. They are worth reading before you call, because knowing which category your problem falls into changes the conversation.
- Accidental damage — cracked screens, bent frames, and drops of any kind
- Liquid damage, which Apple detects via internal liquid contact indicators
- Normal battery wear from charge cycles, as distinct from a battery falling below 80% capacity within the warranty period
- Cosmetic damage including scratches, dents and worn finishes
- Damage caused by a non-genuine part or an unauthorized repair, and any resulting failure
- Devices with the serial number removed or altered
- Theft and loss — neither the warranty nor standard AppleCare+ covers a missing phone unless you have the theft and loss plan
- Damage from use outside Apple's published guidelines, including operating outside the stated temperature range
- Software problems caused by third-party apps or by modifying iOS
Is an extended warranty worth it?
AppleCare+ is meaningfully different from a typical extended warranty, and the distinction is worth understanding. It does not mainly extend the hardware term — it adds accidental damage coverage, which the standard warranty never includes at any price. For a device you carry in a pocket every day, that is the coverage that actually pays out.
Accidental damage repairs under AppleCare+ carry a service fee rather than being free, and the fee depends on the type of damage — screen and back glass repairs are charged at a lower rate than other damage. Compare that fee against Apple's out-of-warranty repair price for your model to see what you are actually saving.
AppleCare+ must be bought within a limited window after your device purchase, and Apple offers it either as a fixed term or as a rolling monthly subscription. A separate theft and loss tier exists, which the standard AppleCare+ plan does not include.
Before buying, check whether you already have coverage. Many credit cards extend manufacturer warranties, some cover cell phone damage when you pay your phone bill with the card, and homeowner's or renter's policies sometimes cover personal electronics. Carrier insurance plans are a separate option worth pricing against AppleCare+.
Common questions
How do I check my iPhone warranty status?
Open Settings, General, About and look at the Coverage entry, which shows your status and expiry date directly. If the phone will not power on, enter its serial number or IMEI at checkcoverage.apple.com — Apple returns the same information from their records.
Does the iPhone warranty cover a cracked screen?
No. A cracked screen is accidental damage and is excluded from the one-year limited warranty. AppleCare+ covers it, subject to a service fee. Without a plan, you pay Apple's out-of-warranty repair price.
Is my iPhone battery covered by the warranty?
Only if it is defective, meaning it drops below 80% of its original capacity within the warranty period. Gradual decline through normal charging is expected behaviour and is not covered. AppleCare+ extends this same 80% threshold across the plan's term.
Does a third-party screen repair void my iPhone warranty?
It does not void the whole warranty automatically, but Apple will not cover damage caused by that repair or by a non-genuine part. In practice a third-party repair often complicates later service, and some non-genuine parts disable features like Face ID.
Can I buy AppleCare+ after the purchase date?
Only within Apple's stated purchase window after you buy the device, and Apple may require a diagnostic check to confirm the device is undamaged first. Once that window closes, the option is gone.
