MacBook Warranty: How Long It Lasts and How to Check Your Coverage

Every MacBook comes with Apple's standard one-year limited warranty on hardware defects and 90 days of complimentary technical support, running from the date of purchase.

As with every Apple product, you can check the exact status in seconds using the serial number and Apple's coverage checker, which makes a MacBook one of the easiest devices to establish coverage for.

The exclusion that matters most on a laptop is liquid damage. A spilled drink is the most common way a MacBook dies, it is unambiguously excluded from the standard warranty, and the repair is expensive because liquid tends to reach the logic board. AppleCare+ is the only route to coverage for it.

Apple also runs service programs from time to time for specific manufacturing issues affecting particular MacBook models — historically covering things like keyboards and displays on identified model years. These operate outside the normal warranty term, so if your machine has a known issue it is worth checking whether a program applies to your serial number before paying for a repair.

macOS shows your coverage without any lookup. Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac — recent versions of macOS display the serial number and a coverage or warranty status link directly on that panel.

Liquid damage is detectable. MacBooks contain liquid contact indicators, and Apple's technicians check them. A machine that was dried out and worked again for a while still shows the evidence.

Upgrading RAM or storage is not a realistic concern on modern MacBooks since both are soldered, but third-party repairs are. A logic board repaired outside Apple's network, or a battery replaced with a non-genuine cell, will affect what Apple will cover afterwards.

Check Apple's service programs before paying for an out-of-warranty repair. Apple has repeatedly acknowledged specific defects on specific model years and covered repairs well beyond the standard warranty, sometimes for several years after purchase.

Software problems are not hardware warranty matters, but the 90-day support window covers macOS questions, and Apple provides ongoing support to AppleCare+ holders for the plan's duration.

AppleCare+ for Mac extends hardware coverage and adds accidental damage protection with a service fee per incident. On a laptop, that accidental damage cover is the substantive part — MacBooks are carried around, and drops and spills are how they usually die.

The arithmetic is more favourable here than on most extended warranties because out-of-warranty Mac repairs are genuinely expensive. A logic board or display replacement on a higher-end MacBook can approach a meaningful fraction of the machine's value, and Apple's repair pricing for liquid damage in particular is steep.

AppleCare+ must be purchased within Apple's stated window after buying the machine. It is available as a fixed term or as a rolling monthly subscription, which for a machine you plan to keep for many years can work out differently from the up-front option.

Check other coverage first. Some credit cards extend manufacturer warranties by a year at no cost, and homeowner's or renter's policies sometimes cover portable electronics including accidental damage, occasionally more cheaply than a dedicated plan.
