Samsung Refrigerator Warranty: How Long It Lasts and How to Check Your Coverage
A Samsung refrigerator bought in the US comes with three overlapping layers of coverage, not one. The whole appliance is covered for one year including labor. The sealed refrigeration system — the closed loop of parts that actually makes cold — is covered for five years. And on models with a Digital Inverter Compressor, that compressor alone is covered for ten years.
The distinction that matters most is parts versus labor. In year one, Samsung pays for everything. In later years the published coverage narrows to the part itself, and a sealed-system repair is labor-intensive: a technician has to recover refrigerant, cut into the line, braze in the replacement and recharge the system. A free compressor with a several-hundred-dollar labor bill attached is still a several-hundred-dollar repair.
Coverage tiers vary by model line and Samsung has changed them over the years, so treat the table below as the typical published structure and confirm your specific model with Samsung's own lookup before planning around it.
Only Samsung can confirm that, because only Samsung holds the record. Use the official links below with your serial number for the real-time answer. Everything here is context to help you ask the right question.
How long is a Samsung refrigerator under warranty?
| What's covered | How long | What it actually pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Whole refrigerator | 1 year | Parts and labor for defects in materials or workmanship under normal household use. Samsung pays for the technician visit as well as the part. |
| Sealed refrigeration system | 5 years | Compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier and connecting tubing. Published as parts and labor on most model lines — this is the tier that covers a fridge that has stopped cooling. |
| Digital Inverter Compressor | 10 years parts, 5 years labor | The compressor part itself for ten years. Labor is only included for the first five, so a compressor failure in year eight typically means a free part and a paid installation. |
The warranty applies only to units purchased and used in the United States, and only where the refrigerator was installed, operated and maintained according to Samsung's supplied instructions. Installation that ignores the required clearances or a water line connected outside the plumbing code both give Samsung grounds to decline.
Warranty service has to be performed by a Samsung authorized service center. Calling an independent repair company first and asking Samsung to reimburse afterwards does not work, and a repair attempted by an unauthorized technician can void the remaining coverage.
You will be asked for the original dated bill of sale as proof of purchase. Samsung's records key off the purchase date, not the manufacture date, so a fridge that sat in a warehouse for six months before you bought it does not lose those months — provided you can prove when you bought it.
Parts replaced under warranty are typically covered for the remainder of the original warranty period or 90 days from the repair, whichever is longer.
Where to find the serial number on a Samsung refrigerator
Every warranty claim starts with this number, and on most products it is somewhere non-obvious. Here is where to look, in the order most likely to work.
- Inside the fresh food compartment, upper left wallOpen the main door and look along the left-hand interior liner near the top. Samsung prints a white label there with the model code and serial number. On French-door models it can sit behind the top left crisper rail, so you may need to look past the shelving.
- Outside, lower left of the cabinetA second label is usually applied to the outside of the cabinet at the bottom left. If the fridge is built into a surround you may need to open the door and look at the exposed edge of the side panel.
- On the original paperwork or delivery receiptRetailers almost always print the full model code on the delivery paperwork, and Samsung's lookup will accept a model number even when you cannot reach the serial.
Samsung model codes for US refrigerators are long and end in a regional suffix — something like RF28T5001SR/AA. The part after the slash matters for parts ordering, so photograph the whole label rather than copying a few characters.
Interior labels sit in a cold, damp spot and fade. Take a photo the day it is delivered and keep it with the receipt; it is far easier than reading a bleached label with a flashlight three years later.

What the Samsung warranty does not cover
These are the exclusions that cause real claims to be declined. They are worth reading before you call, because knowing which category your problem falls into changes the conversation.
- Accidental damage, drops, and damage in transit or during your own move
- Cosmetic damage — dents, scratches, chipped paint and discolored trim — that does not affect how the refrigerator works
- Damage from power surges, lightning, flooding, fire and other acts of nature
- Improper installation, including inadequate ventilation clearance or a water line connected outside local plumbing code
- Repairs or modifications by anyone other than a Samsung authorized servicer
- Consumable and user-replaceable parts, including water filters and light bulbs
- Commercial or non-residential use — a fridge in a break room or a rental business is generally outside the household warranty
- Service calls where nothing is defective, such as explaining how the ice maker works or resetting a control after a power cut
Is an extended warranty worth it?
Samsung sells Samsung Care+ for appliances, and most retailers will offer their own plan at checkout. Whether either is worth buying comes down to a straightforward comparison: the sealed system, the part most likely to produce a genuinely expensive repair, is already covered for five years. An extended plan bought for years two and three is largely duplicating coverage you already have.
The real gap in Samsung's structure is labor in years six through ten on a compressor claim, and control boards and ice makers, which are common failure points and are only covered in year one. If you want to insure something, those are the things worth insuring.
Before buying any plan, check whether your credit card already extends the manufacturer's warranty on purchases — many cards add a year automatically at no cost, which covers exactly the period most retail plans are sold for.
Common questions
Is the Samsung compressor warranty really 10 years?
The part is, on models with a Digital Inverter Compressor. Labor is only covered for the first five years. From year six onward Samsung supplies the compressor and you pay a technician to fit it, which for a sealed-system repair is usually the larger share of the bill.
Do I have to register my Samsung refrigerator for the warranty to apply?
The standard refrigerator warranty applies whether or not you register, as long as you can produce a dated proof of purchase. Registration simply saves you from having to find that receipt. Note that some Samsung appliance lines do tie extended component coverage to registration within 30 days, so registering is the safer habit.
My Samsung fridge stopped cooling in year three. Am I covered?
Very likely yes, if the cause is in the sealed system — compressor, evaporator, condenser, drier or connecting tubing — which carries five years of coverage. If the cause is a control board or a fan motor, those fall outside the one-year full warranty. Book the diagnosis through Samsung rather than an independent shop so the repair stays inside the warranty.
Does the warranty transfer if I sell the refrigerator or buy a house with one installed?
Samsung's limited warranty runs to the original purchaser. A second owner generally cannot claim, which is worth knowing when a listing advertises appliances as still under warranty.
